CANADIAN PACIFIC RAILWAY
The start of a railway within 2 years and completion within 10 years were conditions of British Columbia's entry into Confederation in 1871. Competition for the contract for the railway was bitter, and disclosure of methods used by Hugh Allen to secure the pact led to the defeat of John A. MacDonalds government in 1873.
