THE PURCHASE OF RUPERT`S LAND
On 2 May 1670, Charles II of England granted Hudson's Bay Company a big portion of North America, called Rupert's Land in honour of Prince Rupert, the company's first governor and also the king's cousin. Canada wanted to annex Rupert's Land in the 1850's. On 19 November 1869 the company signed and sealed the deed of transfer surrendering its territory to the governments of Great Britain and Canada set the date of transfer for December 1, 1869.
